You’ve heard the claims: weighted blankets reduce anxiety, help you fall asleep faster, and improve sleep quality. They’re everywhere — TikTok, Instagram, sleep blogs, your friend who bought one during the pandemic. They cost $60 to $200, and you’re not sure if it’s a genuine tool or just another trend that’ll end up in a closet.
It’s a fair question. Weighted blankets are a physical object you put on your body while you sleep — that’s a weird enough concept to warrant skepticism. And with every sleep product claiming to be “science-backed,” it’s hard to separate evidence from marketing.
This article covers what the research actually says, how weighted blankets work, how to pick the right weight and type, who should avoid them, and what to buy if you decide to try one.

How Weighted Blankets Work — The Science
Weighted blankets work through a mechanism called Deep Pressure Stimulation (DPS) — gentle, distributed pressure across your body that mimics the sensation of being held or hugged. This isn’t just a cozy feeling; it triggers a measurable physiological response.
The pressure stimulates tactile sensory nerve endings in your skin, which activates the parasympathetic nervous system — the branch of your autonomic nervous system responsible for “rest and digest” functions. When the parasympathetic system is dominant, your heart rate slows, blood pressure drops, and your body shifts out of the “fight or flight” state (sympathetic dominance) that keeps you awake (PMC: Weighted Blanket Mechanisms).
The downstream effects: reduced cortisol (the stress hormone), increased serotonin (which regulates mood and sleep-wake cycles), and improved melatonin production (the hormone that signals your body it’s time to sleep).
This isn’t theoretical. A 2022 study published in the Journal of Sleep Research found that using a weighted blanket (approximately 12% of body weight) for one hour before bed significantly increased pre-sleep salivary melatonin concentrations in young, healthy adults — a direct biochemical mechanism linking weighted blanket use to sleep promotion (PubMed: Meth et al. 2022).
A 2024 systematic review in Frontiers in Psychiatry examined 17 studies on weighted blankets across different populations — people with insomnia, ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, anxiety, and chronic pain. The majority of studies showed positive effects on sleep quality, sleep onset latency (how long it takes to fall asleep), and nighttime awakenings (PMC: Yu et al. 2024).
The review’s conclusion: weighted blankets are “a promising tool for sleep interventions” but “more high-quality and large-scale randomized controlled trials are needed to further validate the safety and efficacy.”
The Key Studies
Here are the studies most often cited in support of weighted blankets — and what they actually found.
Ekholm et al. (2020) — A randomized controlled study of weighted chain blankets in patients with insomnia and psychiatric disorders, published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine. 120 participants used either a weighted chain blanket or a lighter control blanket for four weeks. The weighted blanket group showed significant improvements in sleep quality, reduced nighttime awakenings, and lower daytime fatigue. The study concluded that weighted blankets are “a safe and effective intervention for insomnia” (PubMed: Ekholm 2020).
Danoff-Burg et al. (2020) — Presented at SLEEP 2020, this study found that participants using a weighted blanket (about 10% of body weight) reported significantly better sleep quality and higher relaxation levels compared to those using a light blanket. Sleep onset time decreased, and participants felt more refreshed in the morning (Sleep Journal: Danoff-Burg 2020).
Meth et al. (2022) — This is the melatonin study mentioned above. The finding that weighted blankets increase pre-sleep melatonin production provides a physiological mechanism that strengthens the case for their effectiveness — it’s not just a placebo effect (PubMed: Meth et al. 2022).
Steingrimsson et al. (2022) — A population-based registry study of 1,785 adults with psychiatric diagnoses found that weighted blanket use was associated with a significant reduction in sleep medication prescriptions (benzodiazepine receptor agonists, antihistamines). After receiving a weighted blanket, the proportion of patients not using sleep medication increased by 3.3% (PubMed: Steingrimsson 2022).
The honest summary: the evidence is positive but not overwhelming. Most studies are small, some rely on self-reported sleep quality rather than objective polysomnography (lab sleep measurements), and the placebo effect is real — expecting a blanket to help can itself improve sleep. But the converging evidence across multiple populations and the identification of a plausible physiological mechanism makes this more than just a trend.
Weight Recommendations
Weight is the single most important factor in buying a weighted blanket. Too light and you won’t feel the pressure; too heavy and you’ll feel trapped or uncomfortable.
The general rule: 10% of body weight, plus or minus 2 pounds.
- Under 100 lbs → 10-12 lb blanket
- 100-150 lbs → 12-15 lb blanket
- 150-200 lbs → 15-20 lb blanket
- 200+ lbs → 20-25 lb blanket
For children: use smaller blankets (5-10 lbs), never exceed 10% of body weight, and consult a pediatrician before purchasing. The American Academy of Pediatrics has not issued specific guidance on weighted blankets for children, but safety organizations advise against using any weighted product on infants or toddlers due to suffocation risk (AAP: Safe Sleep).
If you’re between weight categories, size down rather than up. A slightly lighter blanket is still effective; one that’s too heavy can restrict movement and cause discomfort.
Types of Weighted Blankets
Not all weighted blankets are the same. The filling material determines how the blanket feels, how heavy it is for its size, how hot it runs, and how much noise it makes.
Glass bead fill — Most common in quality weighted blankets. Small glass beads (about the size of sand grains) are sewn into fabric pockets. Glass bead blankets are quiet, distribute weight evenly, and tend to run cooler than pellet-filled alternatives. This is the type to buy unless you have a specific reason to choose something else.
Plastic pellet fill — Heavier per volume than glass beads, which means the blanket can be smaller and denser. The downsides: plastic pellets can feel lumpy over time, make more noise when the blanket shifts, and retain more heat. Common in budget weighted blankets under $60.
Steel shot chain fill — Rare and expensive. Small steel shot or chain links sewn into the blanket. Very durable, very quiet, and the most evenly distributed weight. These are prescription-grade blankets used in clinical settings. You probably don’t need this unless a doctor or occupational therapist specifically recommends it.
Weighted throws vs. bed-sized blankets — Throws weigh 5-12 lbs and are sized for couch or lap use (roughly 48" x 72"). They’re good for anxiety during the day but won’t cover your whole body for sleep. Bed-sized blankets (twin, full, queen, king) provide full-body coverage. If you’re buying for sleep, get a bed-sized blanket that covers from shoulders to feet.
Material Considerations
The covering fabric matters more than most people realize. A weighted blanket filled with glass beads is still heavy and traps heat if the outer fabric doesn’t breathe.
Cotton — Breathable, natural, washable. The standard choice. Look for organic cotton or cotton with a percale weave for maximum breathability.
Bamboo-derived viscose — Softer than cotton, naturally moisture-wicking, and cooler to the touch. Good for hot sleepers. The trade-off: bamboo rayon is more delicate and may pill over time.
Microfiber/polyester — Cheap, soft, but traps heat. Avoid if you sleep warm or live in a hot climate.
Removable cover — Strongly recommended. Most weighted blankets cannot go in a washing machine — the weight and filling damage the machine. A removable, machine-washable cover solves this problem. If the blanket doesn’t have a removable cover, you’ll need to spot-clean it, which is impractical for something you sleep with every night.
Cooling features — Some weighted blankets advertise “cooling” technology: bamboo covers, cooling gel layers, or airflow-enhancing quilting patterns. These help, but a weighted blanket will always trap more heat than a regular sheet. If you sleep hot, look for a blanket with a cotton or bamboo cover AND glass bead fill (which runs cooler than plastic pellets).

Who Should NOT Use a Weighted Blanket
Weighted blankets are safe for most adults, but there are clear contraindications.
Infants and toddlers — The AAP Safe Sleep guidelines recommend against any soft or heavy objects in a crib. A weighted blanket on an infant or toddler presents a suffocation risk. Do not buy a weighted blanket for a child under 2 years old, and consult a pediatrician before introducing one to any child.
People with sleep apnea — The added weight on the chest can worsen breathing difficulties during sleep. If you have diagnosed or suspected sleep apnea, talk to your doctor before using a weighted blanket.
People with claustrophobia — The sensation of being held down under 15-25 pounds of blanket can trigger anxiety rather than relieve it. If confined spaces make you uncomfortable, try a weighted lap pad first (much smaller, less intense) before committing to a full bed-sized blanket.
People with respiratory conditions — Asthma, COPD, bronchitis, or any condition that affects breathing. The chest pressure, even if distributed, can feel restrictive.
People with circulation disorders — The pressure can theoretically worsen circulation issues. If you have peripheral artery disease, Raynaud’s, or other circulatory problems, ask your doctor before using a weighted blanket.
Post-surgical recovery — If you’ve had recent chest, abdominal, or spinal surgery, the weight can put pressure on healing tissue.

Weighted Blanket Alternatives
If a weighted blanket sounds appealing but you’re not ready to commit $60-200, or if the full-body weight feels like too much, consider these alternatives.
Weighted lap pads — Smaller (5-12 lbs), sized to drape over your lap or shoulders. Useful for anxiety during work, travel, or reading. Much less expensive ($20-40). Good for testing whether deep pressure is something you find calming before buying a full blanket.

Verdict: Is a Weighted Blanket Worth Trying?
The evidence suggests yes — for the right person. Weighted blankets improve sleep quality, reduce nighttime awakenings, and increase melatonin production in several peer-reviewed studies. The mechanism (deep pressure stimulation activating the parasympathetic nervous system) is physiologically plausible and supported by biochemical evidence.
But they’re not for everyone. If you overheat at night, are claustrophobic, have a respiratory condition, or simply don’t like the feeling of pressure while you sleep, a weighted blanket will not help you — and it’s $60-150 you won’t get back.
The best approach: buy from a retailer with a good return policy. Use the blanket for at least two weeks (it can take a few nights to adjust to the sensation). If you sleep hotter, notice discomfort, or find the pressure unpleasant, return it.
If you have anxiety that interferes with sleep onset and you don’t overheat or feel claustrophobic — this might be the tool that actually works.
