Thermacell devices
Thermacell uses a butane cartridge to heat a mat infused with allethrin (a synthetic form of a chrysanthemum-derived insecticide). Thermacell is best for creating a mosquito-free zone on a deck, patio, or campsite. The E55 rechargeable model covers about 5.5 hours per charge. Refill mats and butane cartridges are widely available.
Trade-off: It works great in still air, poorly in a breeze. And because it uses an insecticide vapor (not a repellent on skin), it’s temperature-dependent — cooler temperatures reduce the vapor output.
CO2-baited mosquito traps (Mosquito Magnet)
These traps, like Mosquito Magnet, convert propane into CO2 to mimic human breath. They then capture mosquitoes with a vacuum fan. The idea is to draw mosquitoes away from you and trap them. Safety: Permethrin is toxic to cats when wet but safe once dry. Do not spray it on skin — only on clothing.
Mosquito nets
A physical mosquito net is the simplest, most reliable protection — it can’t fail if it’s intact and properly positioned. For beds in open-air rooms or tropical travel, a permethrin-treated net (like those from Vestergaard or the military-issue style) is the reference standard. Whole-home screen systems
For homes where mosquitoes are a constant problem, some companies install retractable screen systems for garages, porches, and large openings. These range from $500–3000 depending on size. They transform an outdoor living space into a screened room — expensive but effectively eliminates the problem in that space.
What May Actually Work for You
Here’s how to match solutions to your situation:
Backyard sitting (patio/deck): A fan is the cheapest and most effective immediate solution. Add a Thermacell (on calm evenings). Apply picaridin spray to exposed skin. Eliminate standing water nearby. This combo covers 95% of backyard scenarios.
Hiking or camping: Treat clothing with permethrin (or buy pre-treated). Apply 20–30% DEET or 20% picaridin to exposed skin. Bring a head net for bad areas. This combination is what outdoor professionals and military use.
Sleeping in an open room: Window fans (pointing outward) + intact screens. If you’re in a tropical area without screens, a treated bed net is mandatory.
Large yard (half-acre or more): Professional spraying or a CO2 trap can meaningfully reduce the population. But still use personal repellent — spraying isn’t 100% coverage. Eliminating standing water is more impactful on a large property than a small one.
On a budget: Eliminate standing water. Wear light long sleeves at dusk. Use a $20 box fan on the patio. Buy a bottle of picaridin spray ($8–12) for exposed skin. These four steps cost under $35 and are more effective than most of the expensive gadgets on Amazon.
Common Mistakes
Bug zappers
Bug zappers use UV light to attract insects and electrocute them. Studies from Colorado State University and the American Mosquito Control Association have repeatedly shown that bug zappers kill very few mosquitoes — the vast majority of the insects they kill are harmless or beneficial (moths, beetles, midges, and pollinators) (SGV Mosquito: Do Bug Zappers Work?). Mosquitoes are not strongly attracted to UV light. A bug zapper may kill thousands of insects and hardly touch the mosquito population.
Ultrasonic repellents
Ultrasonic devices that emit high-frequency sounds to “repel” mosquitoes have been repeatedly debunked. Vitamin B1, garlic, home remedies
Despite persistent internet claims, there is no scientific evidence that taking vitamin B1 (thiamine), eating garlic, consuming brewer’s yeast, or using sonic apps repels mosquitoes. The CDC does not list any of these as recommended methods. A mosquito will find you whether you ate garlic or not.
Applying repellent wrong
Many people apply repellent too thinly or only on arms and legs.
