This article takes a hard look at the most common mosquito devices on the market — traps, Thermacell, bug zappers, UV light traps, CO₂ traps, fans, and sonic repellers — and separates what actually works from what’s backed by marketing alone.

How Mosquito Traps Work — The General Science

Most mosquito traps attempt to trick mosquitoes into believing a human is present. They do this by mimicking the signals mosquitoes use to find us:

  • Carbon dioxide (CO₂) — The primary attractant. Female mosquitoes detect the CO₂ plume in human breath from up to 50 meters away (Science.org: World’s largest scent arena). Many traps use propane combustion or compressed CO₂ tanks to release a steady stream.
  • Heat — Mosquitoes use thermal sensors to locate warm-blooded hosts. Some traps incorporate heating elements (Brandeis: How mosquitoes find humans).
  • Chemical attractants — Octenol (a compound found in cow breath), lactic acid, and other chemical lures are used to make traps more attractive.
  • UV light — Used in many cheaper traps, despite the fact that mosquitoes are not strongly attracted to ultraviolet light.

Once mosquitoes approach, traps capture them via vacuum suction (fan-based), sticky glue boards, or electrocution.

The fundamental problem was summarized well by Joe Conlon, technical adviser of the American Mosquito Control Association: traps “will capture mosquitoes, there’s no question about it, but they’re not as attractive as humans are.” He told Wirecutter that if you put a trap in your yard and you’re standing between the trap and the breeding habitat, “you’re going to get fed upon” (Wirecutter: Mosquito Control Gear). A study in Acta Tropica looked at three different traps and found that they “either significantly increased or had no effect on the biting-pressure at short distances compared with the unprotected control” (cited by Wirecutter).

In other words: traps can catch mosquitoes, but they can also pull more mosquitoes into your yard than they catch — and you’re the more attractive target standing right there.

Thermacell — Portable Spatial Repellent

Thermacell devices are not traps. They are spatial repellents — they disperse a vaporized pyrethroid (metofluthrin) into the air, creating a mosquito-free zone around the device. This is an important distinction: they repel rather than attract and kill.

How it works: The device heats a small vial of liquid repellent, which vaporizes and slowly disperses, creating a protected zone. According to Thermacell, the Patio Max covers just over 300 square feet — roughly a 20-foot diameter circle (Wirecutter: Thermacell Review). The active ingredient, metofluthrin, has been shown in studies from the Journal of the American Mosquito Control Association to be “highly effective at repelling mosquitoes” (Wirecutter: Mosquito Control Gear).

Effectiveness: Wirecutter names Thermacell their top pick for patio mosquito control after 80 hours of research. They describe it as “nearly as good at stopping mosquitoes from bothering you as a full application of spray repellent” — under the right conditions (Wirecutter: Mosquito Control Gear).

The critical caveat: Thermacell only works in still air. Wirecutter states bluntly that the Patio Max “loses its effectiveness in any sort of wind.” The AMCA’s Joe Conlon explained: “There is an effectiveness there, as long as you’re not sitting in a place with a stiff breeze.” Spatial repellents disperse like smoke — a breeze carries them away.

Cost: The Thermacell Patio Max runs about $44, with replacement cartridges at roughly $25 for 40 hours of use. If you use it three evenings a week, expect to replace cartridges about once a month (Wirecutter: Mosquito Control Gear).

Safety: The EPA states that metofluthrin “is practically non-toxic to mammals and birds” and approved for use in outdoor spatial repellents. The AMCA notes that “the dosages at which these products are legally dispensed are at least 100-fold less than the point at which public health and environmental safety merit consideration” (Wirecutter: Mosquito Control Gear).

Verdict: Works well for small, sheltered patios and decks in calm conditions. Useless in wind. Good for creating a bite-free zone when you’re sitting still, but not for walking around or large open spaces.

Mosquito Magnet / CO₂ Traps — Expensive but Effective

Devices like the Mosquito Magnet and Mega-Catch are a different category entirely. These are large, propane-powered traps that cost $300–500 and are designed to cover larger properties — typically up to 1 acre.

How they work: A propane tank feeds a catalytic converter that produces CO₂, heat, and moisture — mimicking human exhalation. An attractant (usually octenol) is released alongside the CO₂. A vacuum fan pulls approaching mosquitoes into a catch net where they dehydrate and die.

Effectiveness: Consumer Reports notes that popular traps like the Mosquito Magnet “can also catch a lot of mosquitoes” (Consumer Reports: Mosquito Traps). The US military and some mosquito control districts use similar CO₂-baited traps for surveillance. For large properties with significant mosquito pressure, a CO₂ trap can reduce the local population when placed strategically.

The downsides are substantial:

  • Cost: $300–500 upfront, plus ongoing propane tank refills ($15–20 each, lasting 3–4 weeks) and attractant refills.
  • Maintenance: The traps require regular cleaning and net replacement. The Mosquito Magnet website recommends checking the catch net every 2–3 weeks and cleaning the unit regularly.
  • Placement is critical: The trap needs to be placed between the breeding habitat and the area you want to protect — downwind of the breeding area and upwind of people. Get this wrong and you’re attracting mosquitoes toward your seating area.
  • You’re still more attractive: The AMCA’s Conlon told Wirecutter that given the choice, a mosquito will always head toward a human over the trap’s attractant (Wirecutter: Mosquito Control Gear).

Verdict: CO₂ traps can work for large properties (1+ acre) with persistent mosquito problems, but they require significant investment, maintenance, and correct placement. They’re a supplementary tool, not a replacement for source reduction and personal repellents. For most people on standard suburban lots, the cost and maintenance aren’t justified.

DynaTrap / UV Light Traps — The Wrong Attractant

DynaTrap and similar devices use UV light as their primary attractant, combined with a fan to suck insects into a catch chamber where they dehydrate.

The problem: Mosquitoes are not strongly attracted to UV light. The University of Delaware ran the definitive study on this: across six residential bug zappers (which also use UV light as attractant) over 10 weeks, of the 13,789 insects killed, only 31 were biting flies including mosquitoes — a rate of 0.22% (Wirecutter: Do Bug Zappers Work?).

Dr. Jonathan Day, a medical entomologist at the University of Florida, told Wirecutter: “I’m surprised bug zappers are even still around” (Wirecutter: Do Bug Zappers Work?). Leslie Vosshall, a neurobiology professor at Rockefeller University, put it simply: “Bug zappers are good for attracting insects that are attracted to bug zappers” — which mosquitoes are not.

DynaTrap adds a fan-based capture mechanism to the UV light, which at least prevents the aerosolized bug-part problem of electric zappers. But the fundamental attractant is wrong. Mosquitoes find you through CO₂, not light.

Verdict: UV-based traps are not effective for mosquito control. They catch other insects (moths, beetles, midges) but the evidence consistently shows they don’t meaningfully reduce mosquito populations or biting rates.

Bug Zappers — A Complete Waste

Bug zappers are the most aggressively marketed mosquito device, and the most thoroughly debunked.

The data is damning:

  • University of Delaware study: Tracked six residential bug zappers over 10 weeks. Of 13,789 insects killed, only 31 were biting flies (including mosquitoes) — 0.22%. The authors concluded the devices are “worthless for biting fly reduction” (Wirecutter: Do Bug Zappers Work?).
  • Notre Dame studies: Two separate studies found mosquitoes comprised just 4.1% and 6.4% of the daily catch over an entire season (Wirecutter: Do Bug Zappers Work?).
  • Colorado State University Extension: “No controlled scientific study has shown that these devices reduce mosquito biting rates outdoors” (Wirecutter: Do Bug Zappers Work?).

Beyond being ineffective for mosquitoes, bug zappers actively harm the ecosystem. The University of Delaware study documented “many thousands of nontarget insects representing a rich taxonomic diversity” being killed — including moths, beetles, parasitic wasps, and other beneficial insects. The authors wrote: “Even if targeted biting flies were effectively controlled by electric zappers, the resulting destruction of thousands of parasitoids, predators, aquatic insects, and other members of the nocturnally active fauna would be difficult to justify” (Wirecutter: Do Bug Zappers Work?).

There’s also the gross factor: a Kansas State University study found that the force of electrocution can aerosolize bacteria from bug parts, potentially spraying them up to 7 feet (Wirecutter: Do Bug Zappers Work?).

Verdict: Don’t buy a bug zapper. Every mosquito expert, university extension office, and peer-reviewed study we can find agrees. They kill the wrong bugs, harm beneficial insects, and do nothing to reduce mosquito bites.

Fans — The Best Cheap Solution

A $20 box fan will do more for your mosquito comfort than most of the expensive gadgets on the market.

The science is straightforward: Mosquitoes are weak fliers. A sustained breeze of 10–15 mph (about what a medium box fan produces at close range) makes it nearly impossible for them to fly. The CDC lists fans as an effective physical barrier against mosquitoes (CDC: Prevent Mosquito Bites). A 2023 study in the journal Parasites & Vectors found that ceiling fans reduced mosquito house entry by 91% compared with control (PMC: Effect of ventilation on malaria mosquito house entry).

The AMCA’s Joe Conlon told Wirecutter: “There is no scientific data that I’m aware of that has ever tested that out to find out how many cubic feet per minute you need to keep mosquitoes at bay, but I think most people would agree that if you’re outside sitting on a porch and you’re in 15 mph winds, you’re not getting bitten by mosquitoes” (Wirecutter: Mosquito Control Gear).

Placement matters. Conlon recommends keeping fans low, below table level, because some species (including Aedes aegypti, which spreads Zika) “tend to prefer the lower extremities to bite” and “like to hide underneath outdoor furniture” (Wirecutter: Mosquito Control Gear).

Terminix also cites studies showing that airflow of just 1–2 mph is enough to deter mosquitoes, and that fans are one of the most underrated mosquito control tools available (Terminix: Can a Fan Keep Mosquitoes Away?).

Verdict: The best mosquito control device you can buy is a fan. It’s cheap, works immediately, requires no chemicals or maintenance, and doubles as a cooling device. Every patio and deck should have one.

Sonic Repellents / Apps — Debunked

Ultrasonic mosquito repellers — whether standalone devices, plug-in units, or smartphone apps — have been tested repeatedly and found to have zero effect.

The Cochrane Review (Enayati, Hemingway & Garner, 2007) pooled the results of 10 field trials of electronic mosquito repellers and concluded there is “no evidence to support their promotion or use” (Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews: Electronic mosquito repellents). The review found no reduction in mosquito biting rates or malaria infection.

The AMCA is similarly blunt: “At least 10 studies in the past 15 years have unanimously denounced ultrasonic devices as having no repellency value whatsoever.” Conlon told Wirecutter, “I could send you pictures of sound producers that have got mosquitoes standing on them” (Wirecutter: Mosquito Control Gear).

The biological argument against them is clear: mosquitoes locate hosts through CO₂, heat, and scent — not sound. Their hearing is tuned to the low-frequency wingbeats of conspecifics for mating, not broadband ultrasound. A smartphone speaker can’t even produce the claimed frequencies at meaningful amplitude (SkeeterSwitch: Do Ultrasonic Mosquito Repellers Work?).

Verdict: Sonic repellents and apps are a complete scam. Every controlled study confirms they don’t work. Don’t waste your money.

  1. Start with free stuff. Eliminate standing water. Mow the lawn. Check screens. These cost nothing and are the most impactful steps (CDC: Mosquito Control at Home).

  2. Add a fan if you have a patio or deck. A $20 box fan pointing at your seating area will give you more mosquito-free time than any gadget.

  3. Consider a Thermacell if your patio is sheltered from wind. It works well on calm evenings and requires no skin application. Accept the ongoing cartridge costs.

  4. For large properties (1+ acres) with serious mosquito pressure, a CO₂ trap like Mosquito Magnet can supplement your other efforts. Budget for the upfront cost ($300–500), propane refills, and regular maintenance. Place it between breeding areas and your living space.

  5. Skip everything else. Bug zappers, UV traps, sonic repellers, mosquito-repellent bracelets, and smartphone apps are not supported by evidence. The University of Delaware study, Notre Dame research, Cochrane review, CDC, EPA, and every mosquito expert we can find is unanimous on this.
