Sorting a record collection: the fast pass
Most of a collection is worth very little and a few records are worth a lot. The skill is separating them without listening to all of them.
A record collection is not one object. It is a few hundred individual objects with wildly different values, and the difference is mostly visible without playing anything.
Pull the obvious candidates first
- Anything still sealed, or in a shrink wrap with the original price sticker.
- Private pressings, local labels, and anything with a hand-written sleeve.
- Jazz, soul, funk, punk and early hip-hop from before about 1990.
- Box sets, promos, and records with inserts, posters or booklets still inside.
Then look at the record itself
Take it out of the sleeve and hold it up to the light. Scratches that catch a fingernail will be audible. Light paper scuffs usually will not. A record that looks dull and grey has been played on a worn stylus and is probably finished.
Warping is visible if you sight along the edge. A warped record is a skip waiting to happen.
Check the sleeve, but do not overrate it
Ring wear, split seams and water damage reduce value, but the record matters more. A clean record in a worn sleeve is still worth selling; a scratched record in a perfect sleeve usually is not.
Selling a collection versus selling the good ones
A dealer buying the whole collection will pay for the good titles and take the rest as a cost. That is fast, and it is usually the right answer for a large collection in a house that needs emptying.
Selling the good titles individually takes weeks and earns more. The records left over still have to go somewhere, and that is a donation or a dumpster, not a sale.
Verified local buyers in Buffalo, NY are listed in the directory. The price range on the vinyl item page is an illustrative sample, not a valuation.
Keep going
- Where to start when there is too much stuff
A house full of possessions is not one job, it is a few hundred small decisions. This is the order that keeps you from making them twice.
- Clearing an estate: the first few days
What to do before anything is sold, donated or thrown out, and why the order matters more than the speed.
- Sorting a storage unit without paying for it twice
A storage unit is a monthly bill attached to a pile of decisions you have not made yet. Here is how to empty one deliberately.
